Acne- A Skin Disorder You Need To Control

Acne as the name implies is a common skin disorder that causes series of blemishes or spots on the skin, which includes pimples, cyst, white and black head. Acne starts with hair follicle becoming clogged with excess sebum, dead cells and bumps develops on the skin surface as these waste products builds up in a clogged follicle. These spots get infected in some cases causing redness on the skin.

Acne can seriously affect any part of your skin, but it is mostly common in areas with lots of oil glands like the face, neck, chest etc. When you leave it untreated, it can cause scarring and as these spots heals; they may leave a discolored patch that stays for long on your skin, which could last for months or years. Acne can make you feel emotionally stressed, depressed and feeling low self-esteem.

The CAUSES OF ACNE

The outbreak of acne is mostly caused by some certain condition, like the skin producing excess oil which can clog pores, causing dead cells to clump together which makes it difficult for the skin to excrete.

Possible acne triggers include:

  • Hormones, especially sex hormones called androgens that stimulate sebum production. Hormonal changes associated with puberty, menstruation, pregnancy and hormonal birth control methods can trigger acne outbreaks. Some women tend to break out 2-7 days before a menstrual period.
  • Medications, including corticosteroids and lithium.
  • Oil from cosmetics, sunscreens or the work environment (for example, cooking oil).
  • Pressure from tight clothing, hats, sports equipment or holding a phone against the face.
  • Irritation to the skin caused by scrubbing, harsh cleansers or environmental pollutants.
  • Sun, an acne trigger for some people.
  • Stress, which can cause the sebaceous glands to make more sebum.
