Maintaining a Healthy Lifestyle as a Student

As a student, academic excellence is definitely one of your primary goals (if not the main primary goal) but in order to achieve this goal you need to be physically stable and this happens by maintaining a healthy lifestyle.

Students

Unlike most people, students do not get access to proper meals and so end up eating junk foods. From boarding schools to tertiary institutions and the rest, most students neglect and do not get proper diet. Students are known to be the number one patronizers of fast foods and cafeterias as they are not opportuned to get good meals by themselves.

The truth is that as a student, you can maintain a healthy lifestyle by having a proper diet and still get good grades in your academics.

The following tips would put you through on how to maintain a proper diet.

Proper planning – One of the basic necessity of your meal involves a proper planning. If you get to plan your meal as a student, sure you get to eat the right thing and by so, get to maintain a healthy lifestyle. Most students don’t even plan anything, they go on with their daily activities in the manner which this occurrence surfaces.

Time table – I remember growing up, food time tables was a priority in most homes as most families tend to plan their meals properly. These days, families and individuals just eat what they see at that particular time that they are hungry.

A proper food time table would go a long way in seeing that as a student, you get the required nutrients in the right quantity and adequate proportion. Having a time table would help you avoid repeating meals and also help you keep track of what you ate earlier.

Watch what you eat – Funny when a friend told me that she hadn’t been feeding well and would love to eat very well that particular night, asking her what she had in mind, she responded quickly, “Noodles with three eggs and sausages”.  I could not help but burst out in laughter.

Apart from proper planning of meals and setting up food time-tables, it is also recommended that you watch what you eat as a student. Noodles for example is rated as a student’s food because of it quick and easy-to-prepare measures. Some students go a whole day eating only noodles. Reduce the amount of time you consume a particular food (when consuming foods like noodles for example, try to make it as nutritious as possible). Rice also is another example. It is often repeated by most students. A proper food time table would help minimize this.

Reduce junks – The amount of junk foods students consume both knowingly and unknowingly are too much and could affect them negatively. Sodas for example are consumed at a high rate in schools and this is an example of junk food. Try as much as possible to reduce junk foods and substitute them with real foods.

Have a favorite eating spot – Some students try to eat in almost every cafeteria and eatery in their environment and this could be harmful as the body could find it difficult to adapt to some meals served at some of these places. Know which cafeteria is good for your body and stick to the place if at all you have no choice to prepare meals.

Drink lot of fluid – Due to the amount of stress a student undergoes, he/she can be a subject to dehydration. When an individual is dehydrated, he/she won’t sure have the energy to focus on what he/she is doing, such individual would get tired quickly and the rest. Carrying your bottle water won’t be that stressful as a student as it would enable the easy reach and prevent dehydration. Drink lots of fluid, fruit juice and milk shakes could be substituted for water in some cases.

Proper hygiene

Also, besides maintaining a proper diet, as a student, there are other things you could do to achieve a healthy lifestyle, and they include:

Healthy Living

Exercise – Only a few students dedicate a certain period to exercise. Exercise helps keep the body in good shape. It also . Push ups, jogging, cycling and swimming are also recommended for students.

Rest properly – Most students are also deprived of the ability to rest and have a proper sleep. Assignments and other projects are some the few things that keep students up all night. A proper sleep helps calm the brain, thereby relieving stress and also enhances academic performance of students. Try as much as possible to plan your day properly in order to get that adequate amount of sleep. Take a break from most activities and put the body to rest.

Visit the clinic when any change is noticed – Also, most students do not value the clinics and hospitals provided in their environment, and so do not see any reason to visit there. When any change (not feeling up to it) is noticed, they prefer going to the pharmacy to get a few self-prescribed drugs. It is recommended that you visit the clinic to see a doctor in order to prevent or quickly treat a serious illness which could hold you down for weeks.
