Boil, also known as skin abscess is a skin infection which starts in the hair follicle from the collection of pus that forms in the skin. The skin initially turns red at that particular area, then a tender lump develops before the pus is being collected under the skin.
Boils usually appear on the face, neck, armpits, shoulders and buttocks. The boil found on the eyelid is known as a sty. Most boils are usually painful and embarrassing especially when they appear in visible places.
Causes
A major cause of boil is dirt – improper care of the skin. Boils are caused by a germ known as staphylococcal bacteria) which enters the skin through tiny nicks or cuts on the skin.
Other factors that could trigger boils include:
- Poor hygiene
- Poor nutrition
- Skin irritations due to harsh chemicals
Most boils go on their own while others would need home remedies or certain medical treatment.
Antibiotic drug and cream can be used in treating boils but could be inadequate as boils require hot packs and draining as their primary treatment.
Care
