How to Get the Best from Your Sunscreen

Sunscreen or sunblock is a skincare product that helps to protecting the skin against the harmful effects of the sun’s ultraviolet (UV) rays. It is an important component of any skincare routine, helping to prevent sunburns, premature ageing and reducing the risk of some skin cancers. However, not everyone uses sunscreen the right way, thus reducing the effectiveness of the product. So how do you use your sunscreen to ensure you are getting the best from it?

Go for the Appropriate Options

It is important to always go for the right sunscreen for your skin and lifestyle. It is generally advisable go for broad spectrum sunscreens, which offer protection against both UVA and UVB rays. Mineral based sunblocks with zinc or titanium oxide are good for acne-prone skins. Choose SPF 30 or more for regular use, and SPF 50 or more on days you will be outdoors for longer periods.

Apply Enough

Apply enough sunscreen to maximize its protective benefits. For the face and neck alone, you’d need at least a nickel-sized dollop while a shot glass-sized amount is recommended for the entire body. It is also important to apply enough to commonly missed areas such as the ears, back of the neck, tops of the feet and hands.

Apply Correctly

Ensure to apply sunscreen to clean, dry skin at least 15-30 minutes before sun exposure to allow for full absorption. Apply gently, in a circular motion to ensure even distribution. If you are layering products like moisturizers or makeup, remember that sunscreen should be the last product you apply before setting out for the day.

Reapply Regularly

Sunscreen doesn’t last all day. As a rule of thumb, you should reapply every two hours. Even water resistant sunscreens require reapplication after 40-80 minutes of water exposure.

Embrace Sun-safe Practices

Your sunscreen works best when you complement it with other sun-safe practices. Wear wide-brimmed hats, sunglasses and UPF-rated clothing. Seek shade in the sunny times of the day and avoid prolonged sun exposure as much as you can.
