The cold and flu season has arrived, bringing with it the sniffles, sneezes and coughs we all know too well. According to a study done in Nigeria, there were more cases of cold and flu around August to November and January to March. However, the CDC tells us that it peaks between December and February. But with a little preparation, you can boost your chances of staying healthy and avoid the dreaded downtime of cold or flu. Here are some easy tips to keep you flying this season!

Boost Your Immune System

Your body’s natural defense against cold and flu, so let’s make it as strong as possible!

Healthy Diet

It helps to think of food as fuel for your immune system. More fruits and vegetables would go a long way as they are packed with vitamins and minerals that help your body fight off bugs.

Stay Hydrated

Water is very vital to all body functions, including your immune response. Aim for at least 2 to 3 liters of water a day.

Stay Active

Regular exercise doesn’t just keep you fit – it keeps your immune system on high alert! A 30-minute walk or some light stretching can make a difference.

Maintain Good Hygiene

Good hygiene habits are your first line of defense against common cold!

Wash Your Hands Regularly

Wash your hands with soap and water for at least 20 seconds, especially after touching public surfaces or being in crowded places.

Avoid Touching Your Face

Try to keep your hands off your face especially when you are out and about. Germs (that cause cold and flu) can enter through your nose, mouth or eyes.

Sanitize Common Surfaces

Phones, doorknobs and light switches are hot-spots for germs. Wipe them down regularly, especially when you share them with others.

Smart Lifestyle Habits

Staying free from cold and flu isn’t just about handwashing; it includes making smart choices every day.

Manage Stress

Believe it or not, stress can take a toll on your immune system. Find ways to relax and unwind, and prioritize sleep.

Avoid Smoking and Limit Alcohol

Smoking and heavy drinking can weaken your immune defenses, making it easier for viruses to settle in. Limit alcohol intake especially during cold and flu season.

Dress for the Weather

Keep yourself warm, especially around your neck and chest which are sensitive to cold weather

When Prevention Isn’t Enough

Sometimes, even with the best prevention, cold and flu still sneaks in. Here’s how to handle the symptoms

Early Symptoms of Common Cold

If you start feeling a scratchy throat, stuffy nose, or fatigue, it’s time to act!

Rest and Hydrate

Rest is your friend when you are feeling under the weather. Don’t push through it! Drink lots of fluids to stay hydrated.

When to See a Doctor

If your symptoms worsen or do not improve after a few days, or if you’re experiencing severe symptoms like difficulty with breathing.
