6 Ways Every Lagosian Can Stay Healthy Amidst Daily Hustle

How can a Lagosian stay healthy? That’s probably the question on your mind right now.

I’m sure you’ll agree with me that life of a Lagosian is one of the most interesting, as far as Nigeria is concerned.

From being such an early riser to meet up with work, to becoming a late night crawler while spending a reasonable amount of time on the road, not because the city is so big it will take you hours to reach a particular location, but because the city is quite congested that you have to deal with a good number of people like you out there, struggling to meet up with an appointment somewhere. Hence, getting ourselves all stuck in some kind of traffic that might take hours to get out from. But then, who cares? Just meet up with work stuff or with your appointment at the time due. Nearly everyone cares less how you do that. It’s probably why they say, the hustle is real”.

Anyway, back to my story. How on earth is a person expected to pay attention to work stuff, family, making money, creating time to have fun with loved ones and still make out time to do all those stuff that makes one stay healthy, like taking time to prepare really healthy meals, constantly visiting the gym and all that?

Well, truth is, it’s quite a task. However, here are a few tips to helping you stay healthy and maintain a healthy lifestyle in the midst of our Lagos palava.

1. Start your day right (with breakfast)

Breakfast has overtime, been described as the most important meal of the day. This is because of the many health benefits attached to this meal.

To stay healthy, you need to start on a good note, which is by taking breakfast for sustaining energy levels and aiding in blood sugar management. So, no matter how early you need to storm out of the house, grabbing a bite or 2 of healthy breakfast is the first way to helping you maintain a healthy lifestyle.

To help with a healthy breakfast, consider taking complex carbohydrates and fibre-rich foods (like oatmeal, cereals, fruits, vegetables, whole grain cereals and brown rice and the likes), protein-rich foods (like yogurt, eggs, chicken, beans) and good fats (nuts and avocados).

To stay healthy, you need to stay hydrated as often as possible, as your every cell, tissue, and organ in your body needs water to work properly.

Part of your body’s need for water is to maintain the body’s temperature, remove waste, lubricate your joints, transport nutrients to give you energy and keep you healthy and a host of other things.

So, ensure you drink at least 6-8 cups of water all day long to stay healthy always.

3. Eat whole real foods in place of processed and packaged foods

Rather than just grabbing a pack of donut, meat pie and the likes. Go for local whole foods like Rice and Beans, Moi Moi, b
Beans and Plantain, Yam and Egg, Eba and Egusi, Amala and Ewedu, fresh Fish, Meat, Chicken etc.

Ever wondered why our forefathers lived longer? It’s the good and healthy food factor.

Even, if you have to eat out, for healthy living sake, capitalize more on real whole foods in place of processed and packaged food.

4. Snack every now and then

You probably are so excited or confused to hear this part, right? Yeah, snacking is allowed. As a matter of fact, snacking is important.

Snacking helps keep you from getting overly hungry in between meals and then overeating at your next meal.

However, snacking on the right kind of food is also very important. Keep healthy meals like fruits, nuts, popcorn, proteinous edibles like yogurt and the likes in your bag for snacking purposes.

Snacking on any of these every 3-4 hours will keep your blood sugar steady and prevent your body from switching into starvation mode.

5. Don’t forget to take fruits and veggies daily

Most fruits and veggies are rich in antioxidants and these antioxidants are nature’s way of protecting the body and cells from damaging free radicals, which comes as a result of exposure to radiation and some environmental pollutants.

These free radicals are highly reactive and can damage cellular components leading to a variety of diseases in the body.

No doubt, living in a pretty busy and jampacked city as Lagos with all sorts of automobiles like vehicles emitting carbon monoxide on the road and all that stuff, we are prone to inhaling such toxicity on a daily basis. Feasting on a serving or two of fruits and veggies on a daily basis will definitely help take out these harmful substances.

6. End your day with a warm bath

Studies show that taking a nice and warm bath before bed will relieve the stress and anxiety you have collected through the day.

Kicking stress out as regular as possible will definitely help you stay healthy and maintain healthy lifestyle.

So, you see, keeping up a healthy life isn’t as difficult as you once thought it was. Just try these tips and you’re good.
