2017 Health Budget Grossly Inadequate – Senate Committee

Because of this palava, legislators dey push hard for an upward review of the budgetary allocation for the 2017 appropriation Bill currently before the National Assembly.
For one statement by the media office of the Nigerian Legislative Institute (NILS), the lawmakers talk say, dem dey bothered with the country health indices, because of many years of negligence most especially the huge foreign exchange outflows for medical tourism.
However, during a press conference wey happen for Abuja, the chairman Senate Committee for health, Dr Lanre Tejuoso talk say “There shall be increased appropriation by the National Assembly to the health sector in the2017, in line with the African Union Abuja declaration of 2001, which recommends that a minimum of 15 per cent of total annual budget be dedicated to the health sector.“
He come also disclose say “the National Assembly will ensure that the provision of the National Health Act. 2014, which stipulates that 1 per cent of the Consolidated Revenue Fund (CRF) be dedicated to the health sector, is adhered to in the 2017 budget.”
Dr Tejuoso come further expressed plans of the National Assembly, to helep initiate legislation wey go make the National Health Insurance Scheme (NHIS) dey mandatory for all Nigerians.
The issue on say make Nigerians dey seek medical tourism abroad, he talk say, a situation where the country has to spend over $1 billion on medical tourism is unacceptable to the 8th National Assembly.
