Pharmaceutical Company Rewards Researchers with N16.3M

Astrazeneca, an international pharmaceutical company, has awarded four Nigerian researchers with the sum of N16.3 million for the support of local medical research made in areas of communicable and non-communicable diseases.

The beneficiaries included Dr. Sylvester Nwokediuko, from the University of Nigeria Teaching Hospital, Prof. Simeon Isezuo from Usmanu Danfodiyo University and Dr. Oshun Olayiwola from the University of Lagos.

Prof Folasade Ogunsola, the Chairman of the Scientific Review Committee (S.R.C) while speaking at the Astrazeneca’s research award grant in Lagos, made it known that there was an initial commitment of three years to distribute the sum of $350,000 annually to qualifying researchers in South Africa, Kenya and Nigeria.

Astrazeneca Research Trust, after two years has made a positive impact in eliciting local research till date as 46 studies have been awarded with funds on 19 communicable disease and 27 non-communicable disease studies. – he said.
