These 5 Habits are Damaging Your Kidneys

The kidneys are a pair of bean-shaped organs in your body. They function to filter harmful substances from your blood and turn these substances into urine. They also help to regulate the amount of substances such as water, salts and electrolytes in your body such that they are neither too high nor too low. When your kidneys do not work properly, toxic wastes and excess water can accumulate in your body and cause serious threats to your health. In this case, you may need to be on dialysis for life, or may require a kidney transplant.

Overusing painkillers

Popping painkillers may help with your pain immediately, but can damage your kidneys in the long run. In fact, about 5% of new cases of chronic kidney disease every year is due to overuuse of painkillers. Avoid regular use of Non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDS) such as Aspirin and Ibuprofen and other types of painkillers. Even though many of these drugs are sold over the counter, ensure you speak with your doctor or pharmacist to know the dosage of these drugs that is just appropriate for you.

Not drinking enough water

Drinking enough water helps your kidneys to effectively cleanse your body of toxic wastes. It  also safeguards you from developing kidney stones. Drinking about 8 cups (2 litres) of water in a day is a healthy target. However, if you have a kidney disease already, your doctor may want you to limit your fluid intake.

Taking too much salt

Eating too much salt means that you are eating too much sodium. Sodium increases your blood pressure, which in turn, damages your kidney. As much as you can, reduce the usage of added salts in your food.

Drinking too much alcohol

Your kidneys consider alcohol a toxic substance that they need to work hard to remove from your body. So, when you drink too much of it, you overwork your kidneys and they may eventually fail. Little wonder why those who drink alcohol and smoke cigarettes have been found to be at a higher risk of developing chronic kidney disease.

Eating too much meat

Meat is a good source of protein, which is an essential part of your diet. However, eating too much of animal protein can damage your kidneys and lead to acidosis, a situation whereby there is more acid in your body than your kidneys can remove.
