5 Healthy Things Every Woman Should Do After Sex

After such a heaven on earth moment after sex with your partner, you probably just want to remain in bed, rewind and replay the whole loving moment once again in your head and fall asleep afterward in each other’s arms, right?

I’m pretty sure majority, if not all women, fall in this category. But then, as tempting as this may sound and feel, we’ve also got to worry about the health of our genitals to keep it clean and infection-free, just so we enjoy many more good sex moments.

According to Sherry Ross, M.D., ob-gyn and women’s health expert in Santa Monica, California, “sex can bring a host of new bacteria, which is challenging for the vagina to fend off,” hence, the need to keep your vagina happy and healthy before, during and after sex.

Here are 5 tips to help.

1. Wipe down with non-smelly soap and water

Wash down with a non-fragrant soap and water

Lubricant (natural or applied), bacteria from the fingers, mouth, and rectum can hang around your lady parts and can increase a woman’s chance of developing yeast or bacterial infection after sex, according to Ross.

So, gently applying a nonfragrant soap or just water (you could use warm water) to wipe your vagina will help ward infections off. However, be sure to avoid the use of soap directly on or in your vagina. Vaginas are self-cleaning, and using soaps can interfere with their pH levels as well as the healthy bacteria which you already have and don’t want to get rid of.

In place of just washing down there, you could take a warm shower while you add extra virgin coconut oil to your water. This can help hydrate the skin of the outer vagina and sooth any vaginal swelling or irritation that occurs after doing the deed, says Ross. Again, this reduces your risk of infection.

2. Pee

Make sure you pee after sex

You probably heard this times without number but it sure can’t be overemphasized.

The vagina is a perfect breeding ground for bacteria, because of its moist and warm nature. So, peeing after sex helps to flush out any other sex-related liquids, and can also help protect you against urinary tract infections (UTI).

Note; It really doesn’t make any difference if you pee immediately after sex or 30 minutes- 1 hour afterward. But be sure to pee around that time frame.

3. Wear comfortable underwears

after sex

After a cool and refreshing shower, go for light, loose underwears like cotton panties or better still, do away with the panties to keep your vagina dry.

Be sure to avoid nylon underwear and tight-fitting underwear, which can trap moisture in your vagina and help bacteria grow.

4. Drink water after sex

Ensure you drink water after sex

Just like other forms of exercise which requires staying hydrated afterward, it is equally important to drink water after sex.

So, try gulping a pint or two of water to hydrate you and help flush Urinary Tract Infection-causing bacteria from your bladder.

5. Eat food rich in probiotics

sex
Yogurt

Foods/snacks like yogurt, fura de nunu, palm wine, and other fermented foods are rich in probiotics and have the same good bacteria that are found in the vagina, says gynecologist, Dr. Kelly Kasper.

Snacking on these after sex can help replenish the body’s good bacteria and decrease your risk of yeast infection.

By simply doing these 5 things, you can be sure to maintain a healthy sex life and healthy living, in general.
