Down the ages and in all climes, there have been cases of suicide and attempts. However, it has grown to become a disturbing trend of late. In the last few months, four suicide cases and numerous attempts have been recorded in Nigeria
One major disease that has been linked to the high rate of suicide cases in Nigeria is depression among other mental disorders.
“Depression is the major cause of suicide among other psychiatric disorders.”
Major depressive disorder (MDD) is one of the most prevalent and fastest-growing diseases in the world. New-generation antidepressants appear more effective than older drugs, with response rates of up to 50% but they do not effectively treat all depressed patients. That’s why I would be sharing with you various complementary and alternative treatments for depression.
Below are some of the complementary and alternative practices may be used to treat anxiety and depressive disorders:
Meditation
Moderate evidence suggests that meditation is useful for symptoms of anxiety and depression in adults.
Stress and Relaxation Techniques
These techniques may produce modest short-term reduction of anxiety in people with ongoing health problems. They have also been shown to be useful for older adults with anxiety.
Yoga
This practice combines meditations, physical postures, breathing exercises, and a distinct philosophy. Yoga is one of the top ten practices of complementary and alternative medicine. This practice may also help alleviate anxiety and depression.
Acupuncture
This is an ancient Chinese practice which involves the insertion of needles into the body at specific points to manipulate the body’s flow of energy. This practice also aids in treating anxiety disorders.
Have it in mind that complementary medicine is used along with conventional medicine.
